October is known nationwide as Breast Cancer Awareness month, and Pink is the color which represents awareness and movement to finding a cure. Though this post should have gone up long ago, I still believe it’s better late than never.
Cancer also known as Malignant tumor or Malignant neoplasm, is a group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth with with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body. That being said, Breast Cancer is caused by the development of malignant cells in the Breast.
The first noticeable symptoms of breast cancer is typically a Lump that feels different from the rest of the breast tissue. More than 80% of breast cancer cases are discovered when the woman feels a lump. The Lumps found in lymph nodes located in the armpits can also indicate breast cancer.
It would be very ignorant of us to think that only the older women suffer this dreadful disease. Cases of younger ladies have been recorded and so, I urge us all to check our breasts regularly especially after menstruation. I remember growing up, my childhood bff would complain of pains in one of her breasts and said a part of it felt hard and funny. As young girls, we shrugged it off as nothing, probably just body changes thanks to purberty until my mum insisted she went to the hospital where they found and took out a lump. Fortunately, it wasn’t cancerous.
We shouldn’t be too shy to let our doctors even the male ones examine us cos as the saying goes, ‘early detection can save lives’.
In support of the awareness & movement to finding a cure for this disease, I am sporting my pink chiffon top. Let’s spread the word guys. Let’s help save a sister, daughter, mother, cousin…
Here’s a link to the five steps of self Breast examination.
